Science
At HFJS, staff and pupils have collaboratively developed a clear science vision and set of principles that underpin the teaching and learning of science across the school.
Children at HFJS take part in weekly science lessons. Before starting each unit of work, pupils complete a pre-assessment to identify their existing knowledge and understanding of the topic. They then generate questions they would like to explore, which are revisited and answered throughout the unit.
To support the retrieval of prior learning, lessons begin with short “flashback” activities. In addition, pupils read a science-related story linked to previous learning as part of their reading lessons each term.
We also celebrate Science Week at the beginning of the summer term. During this time, different year groups learn about the important work of various scientists and take part in scientific investigations, working in the same way that their scientist does.
