History
History at Higham Ferrers Junior School
At Higham Ferrers Junior School, we believe that history helps pupils understand the world they live in and their place within it. Through the study of the past, children develop a sense of curiosity, empathy and respect for different people, cultures and times.
Our history curriculum is carefully sequenced to build pupils’ knowledge and understanding over time. Children explore local, British and world history, learning about significant events, periods and individuals who have shaped the past and continue to influence the present. We encourage pupils to make meaningful connections between different historical periods and to recognise similarities and differences across time.
Lessons are planned to focus on one of the key historical concepts:
- Perspectives
- Continuity and change
- Cause and effect
- Significance
- Evidence
- Empathy
- Contestability
History lessons are enquiry-led and encourage pupils to ask thoughtful questions, evaluate evidence and consider different perspectives. Children learn to use a range of historical sources, such as artefacts, documents, images and first-hand accounts, to support their ideas and develop their reasoning skills. Vocabulary is explicitly taught so that pupils can communicate their understanding clearly and confidently.
Children are given regular opportunities to develop their historical knowledge, understanding and curiosity through a range of trips, visits and practical experiences. Each year group has the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities linked to every history topic, allowing pupils to engage with the past in meaningful and memorable ways that bring their learning to life.
We aim to inspire inquisitive and active historians who enjoy exploring the past, thinking critically and forming their own conclusions. By the time they leave year 6, pupils will have a secure understanding of chronology, an appreciation of how history has shaped the modern world, and the skills needed to continue their historical learning with confidence.
